Don does the double

Don Savage was the star of the show on the first club finals day today picking up the Men's Pairs and the Men's Singles Championships.

This morning was a pairs affair with the mixed and mens pairs. In the mixed brother and sister duo of Nicky Moffatt and Graham Line took on Jenny Kent and Malcolm Davey. With the handicap difference of 8 shots Jenny and Malcolm increased their lead to 18-2 after 6 ends Moffatt and Line did get back within 4 shots win an end to play but Kent and Davey held on to take the title 26-23.

The mens pairs saw Dean Brookes and Mick Vidler take on 2017 champions Norman Windsor and Don Savage. Brookes and Vidler took and early 5-1 lead before Windsor and Savage strung 5 ends and 16 shots without reply. There was a mini fight back which saw Vidler and Brookes get within 4 shots but Windsor and Savage held on to take the title 33-15.

On to the afternoon games where singles was the name of the game. In the mens championship it saw a rematch of the pairs where Dean Brookes took on Don Savage. A very close game at the highest standards saw Don lead 14-9 before Dean get 7 shots in 5 ends to lead 16-15 it was very nip and tuck from there on in and with Don leading 20-19 he collects the 1 he needed to win the title.

The Ladies Singles championship was just as close and it saw 8 time champion Donna Brookes take on Nicky Moffatt, these two ladies could not be spilt with the scores at 7 all, 11 all, 13 all, 15 all, 17 all Donna picked up a 3 and 1 to claim title number 9.

The mens handicap was a bit of a marathon as Rob McConnell and Nathan Nimmo played a 35 end thriller. Nimmo giving a 9 shot start continued to go 15-0 down as they both played great bowls. Nimmo finally got on the board after 19 ends he managed to gradually close the gap 15-3, 17-5, 18-8, 18-13, 18-17 before Nimmo finally took the lead 20-18 McConnell picks up 2 on the 34th end to tie the scores at 20 all, then continued to nail a front toucher with his first bowl. Nimmo springs the jack back and then draws shot with his next to pick up the 1 he needed to claim the Handicap Singles 21-20..... A great game for the spectators.
